In certain situations,
drawing paths in Illustrator can get confusing. This is especially true
when using the Pen tool to draw near or on top of another path.
In most circumstances, Illustrator assumes that if you're drawing near
an older path with the Pen tool, you must want your new path to connect
to the old one. Well, that isn't always the case. To avoid this problem,
put the next point far enough away from the first path so that Illustrator
doesn't display the linking paths icon. After you place this point away
from the first path, use the Direct Selection tool to reposition
that point on top of or very near the first path.
